An Englishwoman from the quiet seaside town of Ilfracombe has been confirmed as a distant cousin of Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley — but she had never heard his music before, a report said last week.
Carole Tovey, 66, who was born Carole Marley, said she prefers more middle-of-the-road songs.
“I’ve never heard his music before today. I used to like people like Neil Sedaka and the Everly Brothers. No reggae. No heavy metal,” she told the Times newspaper.
Listening to a song by Marley — who brought reggae on to the world stage with hits like “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Get Up, Stand Up” before dying of cancer in 1981 — she appeared less than impressed.
“It’s all right,” she said. “I wouldn’t leave the room for it.”
Tovey, who is white, has lived in Ilfracombe, southwest England, since she was six years old and has never traveled to Jamaica or smoked cannabis.
Her relationship with Marley stems from her great-great uncle, Albert Thomas Marley, who went to Jamaica in the late 19th century to make a living in the mahogany trade, the paper said.
He married Ellen Bloomfield and they had a son, Norval — who had an affair with Cedella Booker, a 17-year-old girl of African descent, at the age of 50. The result was Robert Nesta Marley — Bob Marley.
“It has always been a joke in the family,” said Tovey. “People would always say: ‘Are you any relation to Bob Marley?’ and I would say: ‘Yes, he’s my cousin’. We would laugh about it. Now it turns out it is the gospel truth.”
She added: “We’ve not been anywhere other than Ilfracombe for years. We’re just country bumpkins.”(AFP)
馬利以「I Shot the Sheriff」和「Get Up, Stand Up」等熱門歌曲把雷鬼樂帶向世界舞台,一九八一年因癌症過世。

Denmark’s state-run postal service, PostNord, announced that it would cease letter deliveries at the end of 2025 due to the impact of digitalization. As 95% of its residents now use the Digital Post service, Denmark has seen a 90% decline in letter volumes since 2000, from 1.4 billion to 110 million last year. On top of that, the Postal Act of 2024 removes the government’s obligation to provide universal mail service and puts an end to postal exemptions from value-added tax, raising the cost of a single letter to 29 Danish krone (US$4.20). As a result, PostNord is switching

You’re getting the hang of it.” Yujing had taken this summer job at the bubble tea shop to build confidence and get work
Although sending you an SMS (Short Message Service) verification code provides some security, many apps now use code-generating apps and two-factor authentication instead. But more recently, passkeys now use a biometric approach to logging in. Biometrics can offer an even more secure alternative. Following this trend, Google is reportedly planning to replace SMS verification codes with “QR code” scanning. SMS codes are currently used to verify user identity and prevent fraudsters from creating fake Gmail accounts to distribute spam. However, these codes present several challenges. They can be phished through suspicious links, and users may not always have access
