Republican presidential candidate John McCain poked fun at politicians and his host in an appearance last week on the Late Show with David Letterman.
"We spent three million dollars to study the DNA of bears in Montana. I don't know if that's a paternity issue or a criminal issue," McCain said, saying Republicans lost the 2006 election because of runaway spending.
In another jab at his Capitol Hill colleagues, McCain said Congress spends money like a drunken sailor, but he once "got an e-mail from a guy that said 'as a former drunken sailor, I resent being compared to members of Congress.'"

In an April Fool's Day appearance, the white-haired Arizona senator walked onstage to interrupt a string of jokes at his expense.
"You know who I like is that John McCain. Do you folks like John McCain?" Letterman asked his audience. "He looks like the guy at the hardware store who makes the keys." "Well, you look like a guy whose laptop would be seized by the authorities," McCain shot back.
"You look like the guy who the neighbors later say, 'he mostly kept to himself,'" McCain said to cheers and applause.
McCain got serious later with talk of climate change, the mishandling of the Iraq war, the need to close Guantanamo Bay prison camp and to repudiate torture.
"I think we need to work together with our allies and I think we need to listen as well as lead," McCain said.
Asked if the US could ever regain respect abroad, McCain said yes, citing French President Nicolas Sarkozy as an example.
"You know, we have a new president of France that is pro-American, which shows if you live long enough, anything can happen in the world," McCain said.(AFP)

在愚人節當天的節目中，這位滿頭白髮的亞利桑那州參議員上台打斷了主持人一連串揶揄他過度開支的玩笑。
萊特曼問他的觀眾說：「你們知道我最喜歡的就是約翰．麥肯，你們大夥也喜歡他嗎？」他說：「他就像是五金行裡面打鑰匙的傢伙。」麥肯不甘示弱地回擊說：「你看起來就像筆記型電腦會被有關當局查扣的人。」

當被問及美國到底能否重振國際聲威，麥肯以法國總統尼可拉斯．薩科茲為例，給了一個肯定的答案。
