The central bank said yesterday it had lodged a protest with an international conference for changing its membership name because of China’s participation.
The central bank said it was forced to use the title “Central Bank, Chinese Taipei” at the Conference of Governors of South East Asian Central Banks last month after the People’s Bank of China joined the organization.
“We deeply regret and protest this arrangement,” the bank said in a statement.
The bank joined the group under Taiwan’s official title, the Central Bank of the Republic of China, in 1992.
The incident marked the latest attempt by Beijing to diminish Taiwan’s role in international organizations. These include putting pressure on the central bank to change its membership name in the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to “Taipei, China” after China became a member in 1986.
Taiwan is a founding member of the ADB.
Despite the latest incident, the central bank said it would continue to play an active role in activities organized by South East Asian Central Banks to foster regional cooperation on financial and economic matters, central bank Governor Perng Fai-nan (彭淮南) said in the statement.
