The Chinese government said Tropical Storm Fengshen has killed at least nine people in southern China.
Chinese authorities said the storm destroyed more than 1,200 houses and damaged roads, crops and power lines in Guangdong.
Xinhua news agency said yesterday that nine people had been killed and economic losses totaled US$175 million.
In the Philippines, the storm left more than 1,300 people dead or missing, the Office of Civil Defense said yesterday.
Most of the fatalities were drownings. They included at least 173 people who were aboard the Princess of the Stars when it capsized.
Only 56 survivors have been found from the ferry, while more than 630 people are still missing and feared dead.
Retrieval operations for the hundreds still missing remained suspended yesterday as authorities focused on removing a large shipment of highly toxic pesticides from the submerged ferry.
