Hsieh was defeated by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) mayoral candidate Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌).

Hau yesterday called on the government to make aviation safety a priority and presented supplementary measures before regulations can be relaxed.

Hau agreed that the relaxation would help improve the urban environment, but added that the city government would draw up a plan to include the area's development in its municipal policies.

"I still have high hopes that Songshan Airport will service cross-strait flights," Hau said.
