The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) advised the public yesterday to avoid travel to Myanmar, amid a violent crackdown on protests against military rule in the Southeast Asian nation.
MOFA Deputy spokeswoman Yeh Fei-pi (葉菲比) said the ministry is closely monitoring the situation in Myanmar.
The ministry has also instructed the country's representative office in Thailand to contact Taiwanese businesspeople in Myanmar to remind them to remain vigilant with regard to their personal safety.
Yeh said that more than 100 Taiwanese businesspeople maintain operations in Myanmar, but most of them have returned to Taiwan to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.
As for the 20 to 30 businesspeople who are still in Myanmar, most live far away from the former capital city, Yangon, and are reported to be safe and sound, Yeh said.
Meanwhile, Mandarin Airlines, the only air carrier in Taiwan that flies to Myanmar, said that its flights to Myanmar were not affected for the time being.
