    Taiwan tested missiles, report claims

Taiwan has tested cruise missiles that can hit Hong Kong and Shanghai, a newspaper reported yesterday.

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), defense minister Lee Jye (李傑) and another senior politician from the Democratic Progressive Party witnessed the test of two Hsiung Feng-2E missiles on Feb. 2, the Chinese-language United Daily News reported, citing unidentified sources.

The paper claimed that the missiles have a range of 1,000km -- long enough to strike China's two most important financial centers.

The Ministry of National Defense declined to comment on the report, published two days after China announced it will increase its military spending by 17.8 percent this year.

Chen Kuo-ming (陳國銘), an editor of Defense International magazine, said he was also informed about the missile tests, launched at an air base in Pingtung County on Feb. 2.
