DPP politician launches `Anti-Anti-Chen Campaign'

A Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) politician in Kaohsiung has announced a mocking riposte aimed at efforts to oust President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).

Hung Ping-lang (洪平朗), who is running for Kaohsiung City councilor, called on the public yesterday to donate NT$1 each to express their support for his "Anti-Anti-Chen Campaign."

The campaign was launched to counter a drive initiated by former DPP Chairman Shih Ming-teh (施明德) aimed at forcing Chen to resign over alleged corruption scandals involving his family members.

Shih has called for 1 million people to donate NT$100 each to sponsor the cause.

Hung said he aims to fill 2,500 piggy banks and raise NT$750,000 for charity.

Accusing Shih of causing social unrest and undermining the DPP administration, Hung urged the public to take part in his campaign.
