Commenting on a recent statement by Deputy US Trade Representative Karan Bhatia about the need for changes in Taiwan's cross-strait economic policy, Christensen said Bhatia was saying only "that the time is not presently ripe to move forward with a free trade agreement because certain pieces are not in place on the Taiwan side."

"One of the foundational conditions that could improve the environment for an eventual FTA would be for Taiwan to have more robust economic connections with the mainland," Christensen said.
