Tropical storm will bring rain to the south and the east

Meteorologists yesterday issued a sea warning for Tropical Storm Sanvu, urging ships to be cautious while passing through the Bashi Channel south of Taiwan.

Tropical Storm Sanvu, whose name means "coral," was 560km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), the nation's southernmost tip, at 5:30pm yesterday, the Central Weather Bureau said.

With a radius of 150km, it was moving west-northwest at 25kph, packing winds of 65kph.

Residents in southern and eastern Taiwan were told to expect downpours, while those in mountainous areas were advised to watch out for mudslides.

Sanvu is expected to only touch the edge of Oluanpi, the bureau said. But it could bring heavy rains to the south tomorrow, it said, adding that intermittent heavy rain was possible in the next few days.

Northern Taiwan was predicted to experience strong, gusty winds and an increase in temperatures because of descending air currents.
