The Japanese parliament yesterday agreed to allow visa-free entry for Taiwanese tourists during the six-month World Exposition which opens next month in the central province of Aichi.
The upper house unanimously approved a visa-waiver bill after the lower house passed it on Tuesday, an upper house official said.
Under the new law, Taiwanese can stay in Japan for up to 90 days without visas between March 25 and Sept. 25, the period of the World Expo, an international showcase of technology and innovation.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Michel Lu (
Lu urged Taiwanese tourists to "behave themselves" while in Japan, implying that there was a possibility that the visa exemption could be expanded in future.
