Meanwhile, an emotional throng of more than 5,000 DPP supporters packed the benches at Taichung City Stadium yesterday afternoon singing songs of hope and progress as the party celebrated its 17th anniversary, according to thhe deputy director of the DPP's Department of Culture and Information, Cheng Wen-tsang (鄭文燦).
Aside from an entertaining spectacle of performances by cheerleaders, pop singers and DPP legislators, party members also engaged in an array of team-building events, to symbolize the party's unity in accomplishing its goals. The sporting events included a water-balloon relay race and a competition in which members threw soft balls at a gong, calling it a "gong-throw" (公投), which uses the same characters as the Chinese word for "referendum."
In addition, several prominent DPP members such as Taipei County Magistrate Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌), Kaohsiung Mayor Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) and legislator Trong Chai (蔡同榮) rallied the crowd to a fever-pitch by inflating a large ball labeled "referendum" as a way of highlighting the theme of this year's anniversary -- legislative reform and the referendum bill.
