Pro-democracy candidates yesterday emerged as the biggest winners in the first legislative elections to be held in Macau since the former Portuguese enclave reverted to Chinese rule in 1999.
The pro-democracy camp was the surprise winner in the polls, with lawmaker Ng Kuok-cheong, 43, and his New Democratic Macau Association securing 16,666 votes, or 21.06 percent, of the total cast.
In the 1996 elections, the group won just 6,332 votes with just one seat for Ng. But this time Ng's partner, Au Kam-san, 44, also won a seat. The remaining eight out of the 10 directly elected seats contested on Sunday were won by various social and pro-China groups.
Ng called the group's triumph a "victory against [electoral] corruption."
