US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan is still fretting about lurking dangers that could derail the sluggish US economy, but in the view of many private economists he seems less worried than just a few weeks ago.
"The exceptional weakness so evident in a number of economic indicators toward the end of last year apparently did not continue in January," Greenspan told the US Congress on Tuesday.
Last month, Greenspan told lawmakers that US economic growth was probably "very close to zero," saying that weak sales had led many businesses to quickly cut production.
But his comments yesterday painted a cautiously optimistic view of the short-term outlook in the US. Economist Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors said Greenspan seemed to say Tuesday that the much-feared economic slowdown might not be ongoing.
