At least one guard has been arrested and dozens of others given administrative discipline in the wake of the escape earlier this week from the Taichung Detention Center of death row inmate Huang Chu-wang (黃主旺) and robbery suspect Yang Han-peng (楊漢鵬).
During the escape, which took place in the early hours of Monday morning, no alarms were set off and the missing prisoners went unnoticed until one of their hostages was dropped off and phoned back to the facility. Authorities strongly suspect the escape was assisted by guards.
After administering lie detector tests to 10 guards working at the facility, one guard was taken into custody yesterday.
Officials said the results of the tests suggested guard Liu Ming-chang (劉銘彰) could have been lying during his statements.
Twenty-five other officials from the detention center were included on a list of those to be subject to administrative disciplinary proceedings over the escape.
According to the investigation report issued by the Public Prosecutors' Office of the Taiwan High Court yesterday, the warden of the center, Lee Tai-shun (李太順) should receive a major demerit for his poor management.
The center's security chief Lin Tu-chih (林篤志) should receive more than one major demerit for his gross negligence.
Hsu Chang-ching (徐長慶), the guard who is still missing and is suspected of being an accomplice in the escape, should receive two major demerits and be dismissed from his position.
