For the sixth year, Spring Wave Music and Art Festival (墾丁春浪音樂節) aims to bring mainstream pop to southern Taiwan’s massive music festival scene.
The annual music festival takes place at the same time as Spring Scream (春吶音樂祭) in Kenting this weekend. While the former focuses on indie music, Spring Wave offers the comfort of easy-to-digest pop.
The organizer has put its electronic music party at Hengchun Airport (恆春機場) on hold this year because of other competing free parties, but its flagship pop concert at Maobitou Park (貓鼻頭公園) is set to go.
“Apart from underground rock, I saw a demand for pop and electronica,” said Shen Kuan-yuan (沈光遠), general manager of Friendly Dog Entertainment, which organizes Spring Wave.
The star-studded pop extravaganza has become one of the biggest attractions over the weekend.
Shen prides himself in identifying rising stars. “I invited Nicky Lee (李玖哲) and Sodagreen (蘇打綠) here [at Spring Wave] before they hit it big,” he said.
Three Mando-pop newcomers — Hebe Tien (田馥甄), Amber Kuo (郭采潔) and Yen-j (嚴爵) — are making their debut at Spring Wave this year.
Mayday (五月天) will close the evening tomorrow, while Jam Hsiao (蕭敬騰) and Eason Chan (陳奕迅) will perform for the finale on Sunday.
