Soul surfers, more concerned with the individuality of the sport than competition or money, are using old boards to return to surfing's original spirit

“Surfing is a lot more democratic than you would gather from reading the surf monthlies,” he said. “There are kids and men and women of all ages, and old folks out there on a daily basis an a lot of them are surfing on the old boards.”

Linda Benson, a former world and US surfing champion, said: “There is a unity that exists among longboarders that is special. It’s about having fun, traveling together and surfing together.”
