National Geographic launches local photo competition

STAFF WRITER

National Geographic magazine has an established reputation for outstanding photographic work, with star photographers working in some of the most inaccessible and even dangerous locations around the world. It has fostered incredible photographic talent, and led its international readership -- it is published in 26 languages -- to look at the world around them in new ways.

This year, National Geographic has launched an international photographic competition with its local language editions to encourage more people to look more closely at the world they live in. Readers of National Geographic magazine's local-language editions are eligible to enter the contest and submit photos in three categories: Natural World, Travel/Culture, People. The grand-prize winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to National Geographic headquarters. According to the Chinese-language edition of National Geographic, the competition will be an attempt to discover the Ang Lee (李安) of Taiwan photography. After all, Taiwan is already a world leader in the manufacturing of imaging technology, and it is time for it to make its mark on the creative side as well.

Submissions are open for Taiwanese nations over 18 starting Monday and closing June 30. There is a regis-tration fee of NT$100. In addition to cash prizes, printers and cameras, winners in the three categories will automatically win entry into the international competition, which will take place in August. Details of the comp-etition can be found at www.ngm.com.tw.
