Saddle up and head to Scotland

A trail in the country north of England has just been rated by international experts as the best place in the world for mountain biking

But the genius of the 7Stanes centers is that they also offer trails that allow beginners and intermediates to develop basic skills and progress on to the bigger stuff. And Glentrool, the westernmost site, steers clear of adrenaline-fuelled freeriding and tricky singletrack. Instead, its Big Country ride offers kilometer after kilometer of waymarked forest tracks taking in stunning views of the Galloway Hills.

For every hard-core rider in a full-face helmet, there is a novice gingerly tipping their front wheel over the edge for the first time. When they survive the experience with their limbs and dignity intact, they race straight back up for another go. You can see them pushing themselves: maybe a bit faster this time, a bit lighter on the brakes. There can be no turning back.
