CMPC rushes out films for Golden Horse

By Yu Sen-lun  /  STAFF REPORTER

To assure the public that the company is still keen on making movies, Central Motion Pictures Corporation (CMPC, 中影) this year will produce two feature films. They are Taipei 21 (台北二一) and Black Dog Go Go (黑狗來了). Both films are currently in production.

CMPC's management believes that both films will be finished by September, just ahead of the entry deadline for the Golden Horse Awards, for which CMPC hopes to gain nominations at the very least. Hopefully this will avoid an embarrassment of having a Taiwanese film festival with no local releases represented. The award ceremony will take place in December.

NT$20 million (US$650,000) budgeted Taipei Two One, a film directed by Alex Yang (楊順清) started shooting in July and is now in post-production . The film stars Lin Meng-chin (林孟瑾), who appears in Edward Yang's (楊德昌) Yi-Yi (一一), and Tsai Hsin-hung (蔡信弘), who starred in Yang's first film The Trigger. The story is about a young Taipei couple torn between romantic and career choices .

Black Dog Go Go also has a budget of NT$20 million. It begins shooting on Wednesday. Stan Yin (尹祺), co-director of Fleeing by Night (夜奔), takes the director's chair for this black comedy. The film will also feature Taiwan's unique "mobile entertainment show stage" -- the decorated trucks serving as a stage for show girls. The cast will include singers Tsai Cheng-nan (蔡振南) and Li Ping-hui (李炳輝), Tai Pao (太保) and the popular girl group Shining 3 Girl (閃亮三姊妹).
