Rated R, directed by Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes, with Johnny Depp (Inspector Frederick Abberline), Heather Graham (Mary Kelly), Ian Holm (Sir William Gull), Ian Richardson (Inspector Sir Charles Warren), Robbie Coltrane (Sergeant Peter Godley), running time: 121 minutes.
Inspector Frederick Abberline is known for his uncanny investigative abilities and his penchant for opium and absinthe. Some say he ``dreams'' the answers to criminal mysteries while hallucinating. He is brought on to crack the case of the notorious Jack the Ripper, who has been carving up prostitutes in London's lowly quarters. Never one to mix business and pleasure, Abberline nonetheless finds himself falling for girl-next-door prostitute Mary Kelly. When she is targeted by the killer, the inspector's job becomes personal. Abberline is hot on the Ripper's trail when he is assaulted by well-connected agents and mysteriously told to back down. ``I won't arrest him,'' he says, ``but I will stop him.''
