Academic fraud systemic

Academic fraud is systemic in academia here. Everyone knows it. I could tell you stories for an hour.

If Taiwan is serious about this issue, it should create an anonymous whistleblowers academic Web site for people to post suspected cases. Academics can smell fraud better than others.

Then create a Taiwanese accreditation board with teeth and no political connections. Place merit over guanxi, and make teaching a higher priority.

Until this occurs, the corruption will continue.

Why did it take the New York Times’ article to bring this out? Why aren’t Taiwanese journalists doing this? Isn’t public watchdog in the job description?

Answer: Face.

I think Taiwanese need to examine their own maturity. Only then will Taiwan take responsibility for itself and earn others’ respect. One must respect oneself before earning others’ respect.
