Can you handle the truth?

I would like to respond to your recent editorial “Camera blackouts and dark pasts” (July 23, page 8). We know from past evidence that the military hierarchies in most, if not all, countries around the world have been known to carry out this type of aggressive behavior toward the lower ranks. I know from my own personal experience in 1962, when I served my two years compulsory service in the British army. Whenever this kind of behavior happened we were told: “It’s to toughen you up and make you stronger,” but in actual fact it made you fearful that it was going to happen to you.

I find it coincidental that over the past few weeks the TV channels have been showing the movie, A Few Good Men directed by Rob Reiner, and starring Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore.

It tells the story of a military lawyer who defends US Marines accused of murder; they contend they were acting under orders.

Will we find out the truth about what really happened? I suppose not after all the cover ups since 1949.
