    Letter: New constitution needed

    By Jiri Hubacek

    Thursday, Mar 22, 2007, Page 8

I agree with President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) that the nation needs a new constitution to distinguish itself from communist China and to reflect its democratic system.

The Chinese Constitution is an oppressive document in which ostensibly laudable socialist principles are subservient to the "interest of state" -- in other words, to the interest of the Chinese Communist Party and the military, who enjoy special privileges as a result of that Constitution.

The community of nations is wrong not to recognize Taiwan's right to self-determination.

As a citizen of both Canada and the Czech Republic, I sympathize with Taiwan and wish it success in its drafting of a new constitution and in achieving full recognition by the international community.
