    Letter: Smear campaign

    By Yang Ji-charng

    Tuesday, Jun 13, 2006, Page 8

The allegations against President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) son-in-law, Chao Chien-Ming (趙建銘), have been used to fuel a campaign to recall Chen. This is a witch hunt and mob trial for political gain. The scheme is to oust Chen and destabilize a democratically elected government.

The whole scheme is simply a collaboration among the judiciary, the media and pan-blue politicians.

The daily leaks and overwhelming reporting of the information related to the case is proof of a campaign for a mob trial, Chinese Cultural Revolution-style.

Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) even ordered a campaign to recall Chen and appealed to Chen to step down or face a trial by the people (mob), saying that Chen would eventually die in great disgrace.

Ma's remark proved he is a lunatic and unfit to lead Taiwan into a new era in 2008. Never in a democracy would the leader of an opposition party dare to make such an incredible remark and threat.

But then Taiwan is an abnormal country. It has an abnormal Constitution, legislature, judiciary and media. And above all, it has an abnormal people who are either cynics, apathetic or helpless when it comes to politics.
