Lu's words regrettable

By Weini Wen

I wonder if President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) has regrets about his choice for vice president. Over the years, Annette Lu's (呂秀蓮) screw-ups have been well documented, so much so, that she has redefined the role of a vice president in Taiwan. Lu has done nothing to support the president and even dragged him into her most recent political blunder with the Aborigines.

Perhaps, what Lu said in the very earlier this month about the victims of Tropical Storm Mindulle was well-intentioned, but it doesn't take a genius to realize that it wasn't the best time to blame the victims of a natural disaster for the damage it caused.

Perhaps, the unpopular Lu's screw-up might have been manipulated by the Taiwanese media, and what began as a careless mistake became overly exaggerated.

But there is more Lu could do to resolve the situation than to keep reminding us all that her love for Aborigines is well documented.

Lu should remember, it is not what you said about the Aborigines in the past, it is what you do for them now.
