Cloud-based data storage company Dropbox on Thursday said that user IDs and passwords of about 68 million clients were stolen four years ago and recently leaked onto the Internet.
The company said it had no indication that any of its user accounts were improperly entered, and that it had notified the users and made them reset their passwords on the accounts.
The firm learned of the theft of the data only two weeks ago after the 68 million user credentials were posted online, but indicated it still does not know how or by whom.
“The list of e-mail addresses with hashed and salted passwords is real, however we have no indication that Dropbox user accounts have been improperly accessed. We’re very sorry this happened and would like to clear up what’s going on,” the company said in an e-mailed statement.
Dropbox believes the credentials were taken in 2012.
After learning of the problem, “we then e-mailed all users we believed were affected and completed a password reset for anyone who hadn’t updated their password since mid-2012,” the statement said. “This reset ensures that even if these passwords are cracked, they can’t be used to access Dropbox accounts.”
Dropbox warned users that if they had signed up for its services before 2012 and had used the same password elsewhere, they should change that as well to protect the account.
“Also, please be alert to spam or phishing because e-mail addresses were included in the list,” it said.
Dropbox this year reported it had more than 500 million users who store and share files, pictures and video, and all sorts of other data on its cloud servers.
Among the rows of vibrators, rubber torsos and leather harnesses at a Chinese sex toys exhibition in Shanghai this weekend, the beginnings of an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven shift in the industry quietly pulsed. China manufactures about 70 percent of the world’s sex toys, most of it the “hardware” on display at the fair — whether that be technicolor tentacled dildos or hyper-realistic personalized silicone dolls. Yet smart toys have been rising in popularity for some time. Many major European and US brands already offer tech-enhanced products that can enable long-distance love, monitor well-being and even bring people one step closer to
Malaysia’s leader yesterday announced plans to build a massive semiconductor design park, aiming to boost the Southeast Asian nation’s role in the global chip industry. A prominent player in the semiconductor industry for decades, Malaysia accounts for an estimated 13 percent of global back-end manufacturing, according to German tech giant Bosch. Now it wants to go beyond production and emerge as a chip design powerhouse too, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said. “I am pleased to announce the largest IC (integrated circuit) Design Park in Southeast Asia, that will house world-class anchor tenants and collaborate with global companies such as Arm [Holdings PLC],”

The “five plus two” innovative industries policy, “six core strategic industries” initiative and infrastructure projects have grown the national industry and established resilient supply chains that withstood the COVID-19 pandemic, Tsai said. Sales in the wholesale sector also grew last month by 4.6 annually, mainly due to the business opportunities for emerging applications related to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing technologies, the ministry said in a report. The ministry forecast that retail, and food and beverage sales this month would retain their growth momentum as the former would benefit from Tomb Sweeping Day
