Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信) yesterday opened its first logistics center in Taoyuan to expand into the sector.
The company has targeted online shopping stores as potential clients for third-party logistics, or contract logistics, services via its mobile phone retailing subsidiary Arcoa Communication Co (全虹通信).
Internet retailers usually outsource goods warehousing and transportation services to save costs, and third-party logistics operators provide integrated operations, customized warehousing, transportation services and value-added services, such as packing, tracking and distribution.
Arcoa president Jessie Deng (鄧愛櫻) said Far EasTone plans to acquire or rent land within a year to build logistics infrastructure, and have its own logistics and warehousing equipment.
“We believe there are great business opportunities in the logistics sector, in particular cross-border logistics, in light of the booming e-commerce sector,” Deng said.
The company has set up a team with more than 20 staff to explore and expand the new third-party logistics business, Deng said.
Arcoa has invested NT$30 million (US$935,366) to upgrade its logistics management system and has rented land for its first warehouse from Chunghwa Post Co (中華郵政).
Arcoa has been providing logistics services for companies under Far Eastern Group (遠東集團), which operates a wide range of businesses from banking and shipping to cement manufacturing. The company also offers services to Newegg, the leading electronics online retailer in North America, Deng said.
Other clients include Far EasTone’s Internet shopping store, called friDay, and Pacific Sogo Department Stores Co (太平洋崇光百貨) under the Far Eastern Group, she said.
