Sherwood Plaza Ltd (西華大飯店), the operator of the Sherwood Taipei (台北西華飯店), expects the launch of its new hotel, the Marriott Taipei, in July to help raise the company’s sales by NT$1.2 billion (US$38.5 million) in a full year of operation.
The new hotel in Taipei’s Zhongshan District (中山), which is scheduled to have its soft opening on July 1, is to be part of the Marriott brand, the signature brand under license from US-based Marriott International Inc.
The hotel, which will have a total of 320 rooms and a variety of restaurants, will be the first Marriott hotel in Taiwan. The average room rate has been set at between NT$6,500 and NT$6,800 in the first year of operation.
“I hope revenue of the new hotel will surpass the Sherwood Taipei, which generated more than NT$900 million in annual sales last year,” Sherwood Plaza managing director Mark Liu (劉恆昌) told reporters yesterday after joining a press conference celebrating the Sherwood Taipei’s 25th anniversary.
Liu said customers with meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) needs would be the target demographic for the Marriott Taipei, as the hotel will have the largest amount of functional space among the nation’s international tourist hotels to deal with business from the sector.
Marriott Taipei director of sales and marketing Elaine Chin (陳芳盈) said the hotel’s three ballrooms and 15 meeting rooms, will have a total capacity for about 2,000 people.
The Marriott Taipei is part of a four-building land development project led by Sherwood Plaza in cooperation with Fubon Land Development Co (富邦建設), an affiliate of Fubon Financial Holding Co (富邦金控).
Sherwood Plaza said the company would invest about NT$30 billion in the project, with two buildings reserved for the operation of high-end condominiums with hotel services, one for the Marriott Taipei and the other for a shopping complex.
Brands licensed from Marriott International are popular in the nation’s hotel industry, with Leofoo Tourism Group (六福旅遊集團) also planning to introduce a luxury hotel in Taipei’s Nangang District (南港) under the Courtyard by Marriott brand.
Cathay Hospitality Management Co (國泰商旅), a subsidiary of Cathay Real Estate Development Co (國泰建設), also plans to open a hotel in Taipei in 2018 under the Courtyard by Marriott brand.

China has claimed a breakthrough in developing homegrown chipmaking equipment, an important step in overcoming US sanctions designed to thwart Beijing’s semiconductor goals. State-linked organizations are advised to use a new laser-based immersion lithography machine with a resolution of 65 nanometers or better, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said in an announcement this month. Although the note does not specify the supplier, the spec marks a significant step up from the previous most advanced indigenous equipment — developed by Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment Group Co (SMEE, 上海微電子) — which stood at about 90 nanometers. CROSS-STRAIT TENSIONS: The US company could switch orders from TSMC to alternative suppliers, but that would lower chip quality, CEO Jensen Huang said Nvidia Corp CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳), whose products have become the hottest commodity in the technology world, on Wednesday said that the scramble for a limited amount of supply has frustrated some customers and raised tensions. “The demand on it is so great, and everyone wants to be first and everyone wants to be most,” he told the audience at a Goldman Sachs Group Inc technology conference in San Francisco. “We probably have more emotional customers today. Deservedly so. It’s tense. We’re trying to do the best we can.” Huang’s company is experiencing strong demand for its latest generation of chips, called
GLOBAL ECONOMY: Policymakers have a choice of a small 25 basis-point cut or a bold cut of 50 basis points, which would help the labor market, but might reignite inflation The US Federal Reserve is gearing up to announce its first interest rate cut in more than four years on Wednesday, with policymakers expected to debate how big a move to make less than two months before the US presidential election. Senior officials at the US central bank including Fed Chairman Jerome Powell have in recent weeks indicated that a rate cut is coming this month, as inflation eases toward the bank’s long-term target of two percent, and the labor market continues to cool.
