LG Electronics’ new Android flip phone headed for Taiwan

Staff writer, with CNA

South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc yesterday said that its new Wine Smart Android phone would hit Taiwan’s market next month, catering to older consumers who prefer a clamshell handset with actual buttons.

The 4G LTE-enabled flip phone is scheduled to become available on Dec. 1 through four major carriers, at a mid-range price of NT$7,990.

Featuring a 3.5-inch touchscreen, the Wine Smart has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2GHz quad-core processor, the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, 4GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel main camera and a 1,700mAh battery.

A Safety Care function allows the telephone to indicate that the user might be in trouble, as it automatically sends out alerts, along with information such as its location, to predefined numbers if it has not been used for a set period of time.

LG Taiwan director of mobile business Jackie Kim said at the product launch that more than 2,000 Wine Smart units were sold daily after the phone went on sale in South Korea last month.

Citing LG statistics, Kim said that up to 80 percent of South Korean users of the Android flip phone are 50 to 60 years of age or older.

Taiwan will be the second market for phone and sales are expected to exceed 6,000 units per month based on an estimated customer base of 3 million people who might want to replace their current 2G phones with faster models running on a 3G or 4G network, Kim said.
