Yahoo Inc’s Taiwan unit expressed hope yesterday that its mobile traffic would exceed PC traffic next year, as the search engine makes a stronger push into mobile and e-commerce markets.
Yahoo Taiwan has launched more than 45 mobile apps and Web sites for its more than 10 million mobile users in the country, generating total revenue numbers in the “double-digits” so far this year, managing director Erika Wang (王興) said.
Wang did not provide specific figures, but said they come close to Yahoo’s global average of 17 percent of revenue coming from mobile traffic.
Mobile users account for nearly half of Yahoo Taiwan’s total traffic by page view and could surpass PC users in the first quarter of next year thanks to the “mobile first” strategy being pushed by Yahoo chief executive officer Marissa Mayer since 2012, Wang said at a press briefing in Taipei.
For next year, Wang said that Yahoo Taiwan is aiming to continue improving its mobile data analytics tools, develop an online to offline business model for mobile shopping, create more video content and enhance its advertisement platform.
“Yahoo Taiwan’s biggest strength is that we are able to predict various living demands based on users’ digital history,” Wang said, referring to Yahoo Taiwan’s capacity to track and analyze user preference through its services.

Apple Inc has been developing a homegrown chip to run artificial intelligence (AI) tools in data centers, although it is unclear if the semiconductor would ever be deployed, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
