Hon Hai’s workers clash at Yantai

Chinese workers at Hon Hai Group (鴻海集團), also known as Foxconn Technology Group (富士康科技集團), clashed at the company’s Yantai plant in China’s Shandong Province on Thursday evening last week, Hon Hai said yesterday.

Simon Hsin (邢志平), a spokesman for the Taipei-based electronics manufacturer, said in a statement that 11 workers had been injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.

Hsin said the clashes did not result in any deaths or serious injuries, dismissing Chinese media reports that three workers were killed.

Shares of Hon Hai were not affected by the news of the incident, rising 0.4 percent to close at NT$76.2 in Taipei yesterday.

Hon Hai said the clashes took place at stores outside the plant, where workers had gathered to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

A dispute among drunken workers turned into a violent fight between two groups, drawing a crowd of between 300 and 400 people, it said.

Taiwan’s cable TV network UBN yesterday quoted Chinese media as saying that the dispute began with personal quarrels between two couples before escalating into fights between two groups of workers.

UBN said one group was from Shandong, while the other workers were from Guizhou Province.

Hon Hai said a fresh dispute broke out between the two groups about 10am on Saturday, but local authorities sent police in to disperse the workers.

The company said the situation was under control, and it would provide additional education for the workers involved in the incidents.

The Yantai plant is Hon Hai’s third-largest production base in China, employing nearly 80,000 workers.
