Prices of LCD TV panels decline by 2%

Prices of LCD TV panels dropped by as much as 2 percent in the second half of this month, raising concern about oversupply, according to pricing data that market researcher DisplaySearch released yesterday.

Prices for 40-inch/42-inch TV panels dropped the most, by US$4 to US$261 per unit, DisplaySearch’s tally showed.

Mainstream 32-inch TV panels declined by 1 percent to US$97 from US$98 per unit.

“Excess panel supply remains an issue for TV makers,” DisplaySearch said.

TV manufacturers were expected to negotiate for lower panel prices to enable them to offer bargain deals for TV buyers during the shopping season in the second half of this year, DisplaySearch said.

“The TV manufacturers’ conservative demand forecast for panels is eroding industry confidence,” it said.

Taipei-based TrendForce Corp (集邦科技) said that oversupply could occur again next year as between six and eight new 8.5-generation factories, mostly in China, will start ramping up production from next year to 2015.

Global panel supply will increase 5.3 percent in 2015 to 204.4 million square meters compared with this year, TrendForce forecast.
