Microsoft and Hon Hai ink patent deal

By Lisa Wang  /  Staff reporter

Microsoft Corp yesterday said it has inked a patent licensing agreement with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (鴻海精密) to provide its patent portfolio for smartphones, tablets and TVs running Android and Chrome operating systems.

Hon Hai produces iPhones and iPads for Apple Inc and slim-screen TVs for Sony Corp.

The deal with Microsoft made it the latest firm to obtain Android and Chrome patent licenses.

Samsung Electronics Co, LG Electronics Co, HTC Corp (宏達電), Acer Inc (宏碁) and US bookstore chain Barnes & Noble Inc are among the firms that have licensed Microsoft’s patents for their Android devices.

Hon Hai will pay unspecified royalties to Microsoft, according to a Microsoft statement.

“By licensing both brand name companies and their contract manufacturers, we have successfully increased the overall effectiveness and global reach of the program,” Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Microsoft’s Intellectual Property Group, said in the statement.

Hon Hai says it holds more than 54,000 patents worldwide.

Since the launch of its intellectual property licensing program in December 2003, Microsoft has entered into more than 1,100 licensing agreements, it said.

Shares of Hon Hai rose 0.91 percent to NT$77.7 yesterday, outperforming the TAIEX, which inched up 0.1 percent.
