By Amy Su  /  Staff reporter

Local governments posted a total of NT$887.9 billion (US$29.6 million) in debt as of the end of last month, the Web-based “Local Government Debt Clock” created by the Ministry of Finance showed yesterday.

Residents in Greater Kaohsiung shouldered the heaviest debt burden, with public debt totaling NT$234.45 billion at the end of last month, translating into NT$84,400 per capita, the ministry’s data showed.

It was the 10th straight month that Greater Kaohsiung has reported the highest public debt among all local governments since the ministry started to disclose local government debt figures online last year to remind local government agencies to watch their spending.

In terms of debt per capita, Miaoli County posted the second-highest debt with NT$70,000 of debt per person at the end of last month, followed by Taipei City, Yilan County and Hualien County, the ministry’s statistics showed.

However, Kinmen County and Lienchiang County maintained zero debt, while residents in Chiayi City shouldered a minor debt of NT$8,000 each, the ministry’s tallies showed.
