Asustek unveils price of new PadFone

By Helen Ku  /  Staff reporter

Four weeks after it was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Spain, Asustek Computer Inc’s (華碩) new flagship two-in-one tablet, dubbed the PadFone Infinity, will hit the market next month at the earliest, the company said yesterday.

Asustek, the world’s fifth-largest PC brand, said the 5-inch Android-based product is composed of a standalone smartphone and a tablet. The company said it has no concerns about delivering the product on time, nor about shortages of key components.

However, because consumer demand for standalone smartphones is growing, Asustek is shifting its sights to the smartphone market.

Asustek vice president Benson Lin (林宗樑) said that consumers who purchase both smartphones and tablets in its PadFone series had decreased by 15 percent by the end of last year.

The PadFone Infinity two-in-one tablet with a smartphone attached has a price tag of NT$27,990 (US$938.47) for the 32 gigabyte version and NT$29,900 for the 64 gigabyte version. The standalone smartphone is priced at NT$20,990, Asustek said.

Consumers may also get the smartphone by paying a minimum monthly subscription fee of between NT$1,758 and NT$2,540 to the nation’s major telecoms carriers.

Separately, Samsung yesterday launched its new 8-inch Galaxy Note 8.0 Android tablet in Taipei, which goes on sale next month at a cost of NT$12,500.
