A job fair held at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung on Saturday attracted nearly 10,000 jobseekers hoping to land positions with some of the nation’s top firms.

A total of 85 companies from the manufacturing, service and financial sectors offered about 6,000 jobs in the Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas at the event.

Attracted by the salaries on offer and the potential employers’ good reputation in the local market, a large number of jobseekers queued for interviews in the university’s gymnasium, the venue for the job fair, the organizer said.

LISTED FIRMS

The university, which organized the job fair, said the employers in the high-tech sector participating in the job fair were mostly large companies listed on the local bourse.

They included Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電), Apple Inc’s supplier Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密), flat-panel producer AU Optronics Corp (友達光電) and PC vendor Asustek Computer Inc (華碩電腦).

Representing the service sector, well-known firms, including restaurant chain operator Wowprime Corp (王品), MOS Burger (摩斯漢堡) and Japanese retailer Uniqlo were also seeking new employees, the organizer said.

HEAVYWEIGHTS

In addition, financial heavyweights, such as Taishin Financial Holding Co (台新金控), E. Sun Commercial Bank (玉山銀行), Bank SinoPac (永豐銀行) and Ta Chong Bank (大眾銀行) participated in the event, the organizer added.

In the old economy sector, representatives from firms such as Formosa Plastics Corp (台塑), and food makers Uni-President Enterprises Corp (統一企業) and Wei Chuan Foods Corp (味全食品工業) attended the job fair.

A senior student at the university, surnamed Liu, said she was hopeful of securing a job at Wowprime and would not mind working as a waitress since she was very interested in the restaurant business.

Wowprime, which has more than 10 brands in Taiwan, including the flagship Wang Steak (王品台塑牛排), is planning to set up 62 new stores this year and is seeking about 3,000 new employees.

A jobseeker surnamed Lee, 32, who holds an electronics and communications doctorate, said he wanted to work as an engineer in research and development at TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker. He added that he had asked for a monthly salary of NT$60,000 (US$2,013).

Separately, a job fair was also held in Taichung with 65 companies offering more than 6,000 job openings. Among the employers were Rhythm & Hues Studios Inc, which worked on the Oscar-winning movie Life of Pi, and said it had about 200 jobs on offer.
