A total of 3,911 locations nationwide have been awarded an “English Services Emblem” — an identification indicating that the establishments can provide services in English, Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (RDEC) Minister Chu Chin-peng (朱景鵬) said yesterday.

Chu made the observation at a ceremony held with Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Francis Liang (梁國新) to award emblems to the 1,332 establishments that were selected this year.

The commission launched the “English Services Emblem” -program in 2007 as part of efforts to improve and promote Taiwan’s English-language services in the areas of shopping, accommodation, food and beverages, tourism, medical assistance and transport.

Chu also noted the growing capability of venues on the outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu that provide services in English, saying that 121 establishments in the islands were awarded the emblem this year, compared with only one last year.

All venues that have been awarded the emblem are identified on a map on the commission’s official Web site.
