US chipmaker Intel Corp announced yesterday that it has expanded its research and development (R&D) center here after merging its two Taiwanese research centers to meet fast-growing demand from customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
The integrated laboratory — the Intel APAC Advanced Technology Support and Development Center — would focus on research related to Ultrabook laptops, cloud computing and embedded technologies, said Glendy Liu (劉麗雲), -regional director of the new center.
“We have been working on cross-department management since June of last year. It will improve communications efficiency between individual labs and strengthen their support of corporate-level strategies,” Liu told a media briefing.
Intel previously had two local research centers: the Application Design-in Center, set up in 1995 to offer personal computer, notebook and server solutions for Asia-Pacific clients, and the Intel Innovation Center, founded in 2003 to study advanced mobile communication products.
In merging the two centers, the new laboratory has expanded its scale by adding more resources and labor.
“Our engineer numbers have increased by about 20 percent from 2009 to this year because of the growing demand for research in software, frameware and platforms,” said Ken Lau (劉景慈), managing director of Intel’s advanced technical sales and services in the Asia-Pacific region.

Bangkok is a key economic player in Southeast Asia, but it has lagged behind Indonesia and Singapore when it comes to the tech industry. Thailand has an “incredible opportunity to build a digital-first, AI-powered future,” Microsoft chairman and chief executive officer Satya Nadella said at an event in Bangkok. Data center regions are physical locations that store computing infrastructure, allowing secure and reliable access to cloud platforms. The global embrace of AI
