Women over 45 years of age are the main buyers of homes bigger than 25 ping (82.5m2) in Taipei City’s Xinyi (信義), Da-an (大安) and Zhongzheng (中正) districts, according to a survey by a real-estate agency.
The survey, conducted by H&B Business Group’s (住商不動產) housing service, showed that during the first four months of this year, the average age of women buying homes 25 ping or bigger in the upscale Xinyi District was 47.8 years.
In Da-an District, the average age of female house buyers was 47.5, in Zhongzheng District 46.5, in Zhongshan District (中山) 45.3 and in Shilin District (士林) 45.1, the survey showed.
Jessica Hsu (徐佳馨), director of the housing service’s research department, said women have become a force to be reckoned with in the real-estate market.
She said many women are economically independent and enjoy good credit ratings. As they can obtain bank mortgages with relative ease, some couples buying a new house do so under the wife’s name, she added.
The average age of female house buyers in the most expensive districts, Xinyi, Da-an and Zhongzheng, is higher because it is mainly older people who can afford the prices there, Hsu said.
Another reason is that many people buy expensive houses in the names of their wives or mothers, she said.
In New Taipei City (新北市), where housing prices are a notch below Taipei City, the average age of female buyers of 25 ping or larger homes is 43.6 in Linkou (林口), 43.2 in Sanxia (三峽), 42.5 in Banciao (板橋), 42.2 in Sinjhuang (新莊) and 41.7 in Tamsui (淡水), the survey showed.
