The central bank yesterday announced increases in the annual interest rates it pays banks on passbook and time deposits to 0.233 percent and 1.043 percent respectively, effective today.
The rates the central bank pay banks on passbook and time deposits were previously set at 0.203 percent and 0.986 percent respectively.
“As most banks have adjusted up their deposits rates after the [central bank] increased its key interest rates by 0.125 percentage points during the March board meeting, we decided to raise the rates we pay banks to reflect their costs of capital,” the central bank said.
Local lenders place 55 percent of their required reserves in the central bank’s Reserves Accounts B and receive interest income from the central bank. The central bank doesn’t pay interest on Reserves Accounts A, which make up the rest of the reserves.
The central bank also said that total outstanding negotiable certificates of deposit had reached a record high of NT$6.82 trillion (US$234.2 billion), an indication that the bank would maintain its tight monetary policy.
