World’s largest WiMAX expo to hit Taipei next week

Taiwan will hold the world’s largest WiMAX expo, offering the nation a golden opportunity to gain access to the global WiMAX market, which is expected to surpass US$10 billion by 2010, a senior Ministry of Economic Affairs official said yesterday.

“This exhibition, together with its accompanying event, Forum Operator Summit, will showcase Taiwan’s ability to create its own telecommunication infrastructure based on WiMAX technology,” said Chen Chao-yih (陳昭義), director-general of the ministry’s Industrial Development Bureau.

WiMAX Expo Taipei, to be held from this Monday to Friday at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 2, will feature 60 WiMAX manufacturers in 250 booths.

To demonstrate their telecommunications technology, the exhibitors will showcase the latest applications, mobile devices, components and testing equipment based upon WiMAX, the latest telecommunications technology that provides wireless data over long distances, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular-type access.

Taiwan’s output of WiMAX facilities generated NT$2.78 billion in production value last year, which outstripped other global players by 20 percent, Chen said at a press conference.

John Hsuan (宣明智), convener of the Taipei Computer Association, said the Forum Operator Summit will attract 70 leading telecommunications operators from 22 countries and will help the Expo attract 30,000 overseas buyers.

The expo will be held alongside Computex Taipei, the world’s second-largest computer show after Germany’s CeBIT.
