Taiwan Mobile sets sights on digital convergence market

Taiwan Mobile Co (台灣大哥大) vowed to become the biggest brand in the local digital convergence market by providing services on mobile phones, TV and computer.

Marking the company's tenth anniversary on Saturday, deputy chairman Daniel Tsai (蔡明忠) said that over the next 10 years, the company hopes to become the largest brand in the nation's digital convergence market.

Taiwan Mobile is also to build a broadband network and develop high definition television systems.

Merrill Lynch recently said that digital convergence is going to be the most interesting area of development in the local telecommunications market.

Taiwan Mobile has an advantage with its cable TV company. If the company uses some of its stored stock, with a value of about NT$60 billion (US$1.84 billion), to acquire cable TV systems, or exchange stocks with cable TV companies to make strategic alliances, this could give Taiwan Mobile a critical advantage in developments in the field of digital convergence. With these factors in mind, the company raised its target price to NT$52.

Tsai said that for Taiwan Mobile, the new year would be the year of digital convergence.
