Green Energy breaks ground for solar wafer plant

By Jerry Lin  /  STAFF REPORTER

Green Energy Technology Inc (綠能科技) held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday for a new solar wafer plant that will produce amorphous silicon thin-film modules.

The new plant in Taoyuan, expected to be completed at the end of next year, will boost the company's capacity to 30 megawatts (MW), with initial monthly production of wafer modules reaching 7,000, a company official surnamed Huang said by telephone.

The company expects its capacity to further rise to 50MW, with annual production reaching 140,000 modules at the end of 2009, Huang said, confirming an earlier report carried by Chinese-language online news outlet, Cnyes.com.

The plant is expected to start operating in the fourth quarter next year, cnyes.com quoted Green Energy chairman Lin Wei-shan (林蔚山) as saying.

The construction of the plant is estimated to cost the company NT$2.4 billion (US$74.3 million), cable television Unique Business Network reported yesterday, without citing sources.

Huang said the firm's revenue from solar wafers is expected to rise 20 percent from last year amid rising demand for solar power.

Shares of Green Energy rose 2.99 percent to NT$262.43 on the Emerging Stock Market yesterday.

The company plans to have its stock listed on the main bourse at the end of this year, Huang said.

Green Energy, which produces multi-crystalline solar wafers, was established in July 2004. It is the nation's leading multi-crystalline solar wafer provider.
