An Australian envoy visited President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) at the Presidential Office yesterday to deliver an invitation for Taiwan to participate in the informal summit of the APEC forum to be held in Sydney on Sept. 8 and Sept. 9.

During the visit, Chen told Australian Ambassador to APEC David Spencer that he has appointed Stan Shih (施振榮), a prominent entrepreneur, to attend the summit on his behalf.

Chen told Spencer that Shih is a Taiwan-educated business tycoon who founded the Acer Group, which has not only sold computer products around the world but has also boosted the nation's image in the international arena.

Shih was included in last year's Time magazine article "60 Years of Asian Heroes" as the magazine paid tribute to the remarkable men and women who have shaped the times over the last six decades in Asia, one of Chen's aides said.

Shih was also given the title of "Star of Asia" in 2004 by Business Week, a US-based commercial weekly magazine, after he was praised by CNN as an entrepreneur with vision.

Shih is the best spokesman for Taiwan in the international community owing to his contribution in putting the nation on the world's high-tech map, the aide said.
