Hon Hai to open Vietnam industrial park next month

DPA , TAIPEI

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密) is set to open an industrial park in Vietnam next month to make digital cameras and other information technology products, a newspaper said yesterday.

Hon Hai president Terry Gou (郭台銘) is to open the industrial park in Bac Ninh Province, North Vietnam, on May 1. Hon Hai also plans to build another industrial zone in nearby Bac Giang Province, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News quoted Taiwan's trade representative to Vietnam Huang Nan-hui (黃南輝) as saying.

The two industrial parks will occupy a total of 300 hectares and involve an investment of US$5 billion, Huang said.

Since last December, Gou has made two inspection trips to Vietnam and met with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, the paper said.

Hon Hai is also discussing a joint venture with Vietnam's City Group for urban development, commercial centers, entertainment facilities, schools and hospitals, the paper added.

Hon Hai hopes to make Vietnam its third-largest overseas production base after China and India, it said.

At Hon Hai's year-end party on Feb. 6, Gou said that Vietnam would be Hon Hai's focus this year. He planned to build five industrial zones there this year and create 30,000 jobs. The investments would be centered around Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
