TAIEX closes week higher on back of modest gains in US

AFP , TAIPEI

Shares closed 0.31 percent higher yesterday as investors took comfort from Wall Street's modest gains overnight and a recovery in Hong Kong after early losses, dealers said.

They said, however, the gains were capped by worries over the volatility in global markets and news that some local firms are being probed by authorities.

In the latest instance, Veutron Corp's (力廣科技) premises were searched by prosecutors on Thursday. The company said it has no knowledge of what the authorities were looking for.

Veutron closed limit-down NT$2.60 at NT$35.10.

Earlier this week, BenQ Corp's (明基) offices were searched over an insider trading probe.

The TAIEX closed up 23.84 points at 7,719.80, off a low of 7,676.39 and high of 7,743.37, on turnover of NT$118.75 billion (US$3.6 billion).

Risers led decliners 578 to 535, with 191 stocks unchanged.

"The local bourse was divided -- between Wall Street's advance overnight and weakness in some Asian markets this morning," said Stanley Hsu, a manager with First Taisec Securities (一銀證券). "The uncertainties regarding neighboring markets kept investors from chasing prices much higher."

He said concerns over recent investigations into listed firms by prosecutors were somewhat offset by a significant recovery by BenQ.

BenQ finished limit-up NT$0.95 at NT$14.10.

For the week ending yesterday, the weighted index closed up 151.60 points or 2 percent after a 0.81 percent gain the previous week.

Average daily turnover stood at NT$110.52 billion, compared with NT$113.43 billion last week.
