South Korean police move in to break up steelworkers' strike

Thousands of South Korean police raided the headquarters of Posco, the world's fifth-largest steelmaker, before dawn yesterday in an attempt to remove about 1,500 striking workers from subcontracting companies who have been occupying the 12-story building for several days, police said.

About 6,900 riot police were sent to the Posco headquarters in Pohang, about 370km southeast of Seoul, at around 5am, police said.

About 10 people were detained, but most of the striking workers moved further upstairs when police arrived and set up barricades on the fourth floor, he said.

It was unclear whether or when the riot police would move into the rest of the building.

The workers have been occupying the building since Thursday.
