New graduates line up for jobs in foreign companies

CNA , TAIPEI

There are on average fewer resumes sent per day to local companies than to foreign companies, even though vacancies in foreign companies account for only 3 percent of the total job market, according to research results released yesterday by the 104 Job Bank, an online recruiter.

Although there are more vacancies offered by local firms, foreign companies receive 13 resumes per day on average compared with local companies who receive only 10, said Monica Chiu (邱文仁), marketing director of 104 Job Bank.

Many recent graduates send resumes to foreign companies because they are lured by the better benefits as well as the more global and liberal company culture they offer, according to Chiu.

Nicknamed "seventh-graders" after the Chinese years they were born in, these students want a more liberal and challenging environment, which Chiu said can only be found in foreign companies.

In addition, she pointed out that working as an intern was a good way to improve the chances of being hired by both foreign and local businesses.

Quoting the research findings, she added that 43.7 percent of companies were more willing to hire and pay more for applicants who have had internship experience related to the job they are applying for.

Out of the job vacancies on offer, 14.6 percent of the information technology industry jobs require related internship experience, with 14.3 percent in the consumer product industry, 14 percent in media and education, 13.6 percent in commercial trade and 13.5 percent in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industry.
