Lite-On looking for a bigger share of automotive market

AMBITIOUS PLANS The computer peripherals manufacturer wants to increase sales in the sector five-fold over the next three years

With an eye on the booming automotive electronics industry, Lite-On Technology Corp (光寶科技), one of the nation's biggest computer peripheral makers, is aiming to boost revenue from the segment to NT$10 billion (US$3.09 billion) within three years, its chief technology officer said.

The figure will be a five-fold increase from this year's revenues estimated at NT$2 billion, Paul Lo (駱捷中) told reporters on the sidelines of the 2006 Lite-On Awards.

As the company has started to approach carmakers and companies in the after-market industry, production volumes will be greatly boosted after three years, he added.

Aggressive

This year, Lite-On has embarked on aggressive integration exercises to combine auto electronics resources within the group's affiliates.

Discussion of strategic plans are currently underway, the company's vice president Tom Tang (唐德銘) said in April.

The auto electronics business is expected to gradually increase in importance along with Lite-On's four other core businesses -- light-emitting diodes, imaging, power supplies and enclosures for servers and computers.

Winners

Meanwhile, Taiwanese entrants scooped five of the seven top prizes at this year's Lite-On Awards with one winner apiece from Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Lite-On Awards are a local industrial design competition aimed at encouraging product innovation, especially among students.

There were a total of 1,661 entries received for the competition, and 30 were shortlisted for final selection.
